Caskade Park Activation

Our mission to bring new life to a park beside the Cikapundung River began in September 2024. Since then, we’ve amped up our efforts with a consistent schedule of biweekly events! Every other week, we’re hosting a variety of awesome activities for people of all ages, all with one goal: to get everyone involved and make a real difference in the park.

The Objective

Caskade Park, which once served as a playground and a public library, had lost its literary function due to poor management. Before, Kami Ruang Ketiga was working to revive the park’s spirit of reading through reading activities and book parties. However, the impact was not optimal.

After several observations and discussions with local stakeholders and children, we realized that while Caskade Park has great potential, the community was feeling overwhelmed by book-related activities. As a result, we decided to refine our goal for the biweekly events. The new purpose is no longer to promote the spirit of reading, but to make the park a place for people to socialize, and they can be aware of issues in their surroundings through a more interactive and fun approach.

What kind of activities were held?

Over the last 10 months, we’ve worked to build connections both among people and between the community and Caskade Park. Here it is:

  • Ceriwis Ceria 🎲
Let’s play and get creative! On our first biweekly, we played games like “Tangkap aku,” “Peragakan aku,” and “Tebak aku,” and concluded with making bookmarks. So much fun to start our journey in Taman Caskade!
  • Sampurna: Sampah Urang Aya Guna with @berkawansekebun 🗑️
Driven by our concerns about the accumulation of trash in the river, we began our event with a tour along the river, where we picked up trash from the surroundings. It turned out that the trash we collected could be useful! With help from the amazing folks at @berkawansekebun, we got creative and learned how to upcycle discarded snack wrappers into our very own mini zines.
  • Ngemural di Caskade 🎨
Our creativity didn’t stop there! We also did a painting session with children, where we brought Keppy and Yoyo to life at “Rumah Baca”.
  • Caskade Culinary War 🥘
Besides drawing and coloring, we also had a great time making sandwiches together and enjoyed them while relaxing in Taman Caskade.
  •  Beads Workshop with @whatloversneed 📿
This time, the children honed their creativity and focus as we learned how to make beaded cell phone straps with the team from @whatloversneed.
  •  Dream Park 💭
To support activities at Caskade Park, we are planning some renovations. We are holding fun games and activities to gather ideas from local children. We had fun imagining our dream Park!
  • Caskade Seruput with @ngombe_djamu 🍹
This time, we also invited local mothers to learn how to make traditional Indonesian herbal drinks together with @ngombe_djamu called “Jamu”. It’s so exciting that we can learn about various Indonesian herbs!

Impact/Outcome

What stood out most was how the children quickly grew attached to the activities. After just a few sessions, many of them would eagerly ask when the next event would take place. Their anticipation made it clear that Caskade’s biweeklies were becoming something they looked forward to. This energy also fueled the team’s spirit, motivating us to continuously design events that were not only fun but also brought new learning experiences for the children and families.

The events transformed Taman Caskade into a more active and inclusive space, where children and families felt ownership and joy.

Outcomes included:

🔹Dozens of creative outputs (bookmarks, murals, bead straps, zines, and dream-park collages).

🔹Adding physical interventions to the park such as shoe racks and wired panels, all suiting the locals’ needs and improving how the space is used.

🔹A visible shift in energy, with local residents treating Taman Caskade as a shared creative hub, not just a park.

People Behind Caskade Park Activation

The biweekly series in Taman Caskade  was led by Aileen Nathania Ho and Jasmine Amanda Herista Purba as Project Managers, supported by a dedicated team of students from both ITB and outside the university. The team was divided into functional divisions: Event (Indira, Daniya, Chrysilla, Lily), Partnership (Darell, Kayli, Andin), Design (Aya, Nandita), and Logistics (Bagas, Akhdan). Together, this structure allowed the projects to run smoothly while ensuring collaboration across different expertise.

What’s Next?

🔹 Building on these biweeklies, Ruang Ketiga will continue rotational projects in Taman Caskade and other public parks (Taman Lansia, Taman Ulin, and exploring potentially new public spaces).

🔹 There will be more collaborations with local partners (e.g., creative collectives, small businesses, health initiatives) to sustain variety in programming.

🔹 The team is preparing for open calls for volunteers in the coming term, ensuring community members and students alike can co-create future placemaking projects.
